I wrote about 3D printing years ago, back when the question was how it would disrupt miniature hobby gaming. That was the 2019 to 2020 stretch, full of good controversies and long arguments. Is 3D printing piracy? Resin printers were well on their way to becoming a household appliance.
The community had already spotted the layer lines in GW’s own previews and photos by then (see posts on Reddit). What I’m only realizing now is that nobody blinks anymore—it’s as normal as color television. The tech is here; it’s ordinary, and we don’t really care. It wasn’t always that way. My feeds have started surfacing those old threads again, so this seemed like a good moment to look back.

At a Glance (TL;DR):
- Hobbyists spotted it first. Sightings going back to the 2014 Taurox Prime preview flagged 3D-printed layer lines in Games Workshop’s own marketing photos.
- It was ordinary industry procedure. ‘Eavy Metal prints prototypes because painted models are needed for box art long before injection tooling exists.
- The lines are a real production signal. Forge World resin can carry them all the way into a finished kit. And their presence in a preview photo is a rough gauge of how far a model sits from finished tooling.
- The 2026 previews look different. The print lines have largely disappeared from recent marketing images. This suggests Games Workshop is finally keeping up with the technology. It’s fully integrated.
- Nobody argues about it now. What was a genuine controversy in 2019 and 2020 has turned into ordinary equipment. Old Reddit threads are a time capsule.

The Funny Lines Everyone Noticed
Back in 2022, a hobbyist posted comparison photos to r/Warhammer40k (Reddit) under a title that felt like an accusation. Like 3D printing was bad or something.
The painted Imperial Knights sitting in the display cabinets at Warhammer World, GW’s flagship store and museum in Nottingham, carried faint horizontal striations that had no business appearing on injection-molded plastic.

Injection molding produces a clean, seamless surface. And, really that’s the entire point of the process. It’s why a kit from Games Workshop looks nothing like a home 3D print fresh off the build plate. The striations on the Knights looked like what a resin or FDM printer leaves behind—A layered, stepped pattern where each thin layer of resin or whatever 3D printing material meets the one below it.
GW never issued a direct response to the thread; of course not! They didn’t need to and it didn’t matter. Spikey Bits later reported the sightings: a Sister of Battle model whose robe carried the same layer lines in a 2019 photo, a Primaris character’s power weapon showing it on the flat of the blade, and, oldest of all, a 2014 Taurox Prime preview, where the treads sat crooked against the hull and a gap opened where two printed pieces never met. Poor tolerances in prototyping? 3D printing? Games Workshop never sold a kit that looked like that photograph.


We Are Trained to Notice Imperfection (it May Even Annoy Us)
Companies use prototypes for marketing all the time, and there’s nothing wrong with a promotional photo going obsolete versus a finished product. Car manufacturers do it constantly. The Tesla Cybertruck is a good example of an early production model never making it to market in the form everyone first saw.
The real question is how a scattered group of hobbyists, got the read on these tiny layer lines correct so early on from a few zoomed-in photographs. Nobody in the industry was really making a big deal out it. Though a year or so later, I do remember Privateer Press had announced the use of 3D printing in their products—the first batches were terrible by the way.
Well, easy. Miniature tabletop hobbyists are specialists of tiny details.
I can’t see s—, but instead I “feel” the details
Of course, I’m a tad older and these days I do most of my close-up inspection with a magnifying lamp, which is essentially a zoom lens of like 400% (better than any high res photograph).

Interestingly, I did look into this in another article project I was in. Not the age thing, but being able to notice finer details with experience. Hobby mini painters with thousands of hours spent gauging mold lines and judging where a wash pools against a raised edge tunes your eyes. If you’re like me, you notice imperfections; when things are off, it can get…annoying.
It’s the same mechanism I wrote about in Attention to Detail: hours at the desk change what your visual sense is able to truly see. What you notice amplifies through consistent practice.
You’re connecting the dots and don’t even know it. That trained eye is also a measurable one—painting itself reshapes what your brain notices, whether or not a given session feels like practice.
Fun Fact: A 2025 Lancaster University study led by Radoslaw Wincza tested experienced radiographers and radiologists against classic visual illusions—the Ebbinghaus, the Ponzo, the Müller-Lyer—and found the imaging experts far less susceptible to most of them than a control group of students. It was hard to “trick” experienced image-experts into believing the illusion. They could easily find the “signal” within the visual confusion. The researchers proposed that years of reading scans trains the visual system toward a narrower, more precise way of processing an image, one that helps them exclude distractions that make an illusion work. Amazing.
The Difference Between a Prototype and a Product
The integration of 3D printing as a way to start marketing and promotion early, documented in detail by Spikey Bits in July 2026, turns out to be ordinary industry procedure. ‘Eavy Metal, the studio’s in-house painting team, works up to two years ahead of a model’s release, because finished, painted miniatures are needed for box art and preview footage long before injection tooling exists. Printing a prototype and handing it to a painter beats waiting on steel molds that might not be cut for months, or even a year or more.
Forge World resin complicates the picture further. Its production chain runs from a printed master to a silicone mold to a production mold—a copy of a copy of a copy—so lines picked up at the master stage can survive all the way into a kit a customer opens at home. Those lines show up on finished resin often enough that the fix is common hobby knowledge: smooth out imperfections with glue or a hobby file. You can even use a few thin coats of gesso to smooth out 3D print lines.

Where is 3D Printing Going in the Industry?
I flagged part of this mechanism back in 2019, in a piece about the ethics of 3D printing Games Workshop miniatures. Even then, GW was already using 3D printing to produce its master sculpts, the printed originals a mold-maker uses to tool up for mass production.
What makes the recent marketing previews in 2026 different is the absence of the layered texture pattern. Hobbyists picking apart GW’s Summer 2026 previews couldn’t find the print lines they’d come to expect. I don’t have a clean explanation for the shift, only a guess. GW signed a pre-let around the time of this writing for a 250,000-square-foot logistics hub in the East Midlands, its biggest distribution expansion in years. That’s a warehouse for shipping finished stock, though, not a fix for how far ahead ‘Eavy Metal has to print and paint a prototype before a model exists in plastic. Maybe the production pipeline is just running smoother on its own. Either way, the lines that used to give the game away aren’t showing up anymore.

Final Thoughts: We Stopped Caring and Barely Noticed
3D printing is a nothing-burger. It’s in our world now, right down to those plastic bitz.
I reflect on the time gap between 2022 and 2026. That first date lands in the middle of the lockdown years, when the entire internet came alive and the hobby moved online with it. I remember the back-and-forth about 3D printing and where things were headed now that people weren’t gathering to play in local shops, at least not around me. A lot of us were at home, working with model kits, engaged on the hobby side of things; painting.
This was a time when we all thought 3D printing was just entering the industry, when in fact it was already bog standard—maybe even maximal peak in the miniatures space. The evidence simply reached customers through those early photos years before the pipeline could catch up with an actual product that felt solid—as good as injection molded plastic kits.
Hobbyists normalized the technology from their own side of the hobby too, to the point that a printer at home now sits next to the paints as a legitimate replacement for a chunk of a GW catalog, not just a curiosity. I know commercial industries move fast, and small shifts in process take time to roll through the whole system. I wonder what’s next… AI-assisted kit bashing?
