You pull back on the trigger and the paint comes out in spurts. A few drops hit the cardboard, then a splatter, then almost nothing. You rinse the cup, wipe the needle, raise the air pressure, and try again. The clog stays put.
To unclog an airbrush when regular cleaning fails, I remove the compatible metal parts, soak them briefly in Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer, wipe away the softened paint, reassemble the airbrush, flush it with water, and test the spray. Dried acrylic paint is often trapped inside the nozzle or front head assembly.
I use this process when a routine flush no longer clears the nozzle. The steps cover diagnosis, disassembly, deep cleaning, reassembly, and a spray test.

What a clogged airbrush looks like
A deep clog usually announces itself through the spray pattern. Paint may pulse, spit, splatter, or stop flowing even though air still comes through the nozzle. You may also see bubbles coming back into the paint cup.
The nozzle is the first place I inspect. A 0.3 mm opening does not need much dried acrylic to behave badly.

Several other problems can produce similar symptoms. Thick paint, low air pressure, a loose head cap, a bent needle, or a cracked nozzle can all disturb the spray. What you need to unclog an airbrush

- Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer
- A small glass brush-cleaning tank
- Cotton swabs or lint-free micro-applicators
- Fine tweezers or forceps for handling small parts
- A clean paper towel
- Clean water for the final flush
- A piece of cardboard or another test surface
- The wrench or maintenance tool supplied for your airbrush, if the nozzle requires one

I pour only enough cleaner into the glass tank to cover the tiny front-end parts. Check every surface the cleaner touches—including the jar lid, gasket, and inserts—for compatibility. Follow the label for storage and disposal.
Winsor & Newton markets this product as a brush cleaner and restorer. Its use on removable bare-metal airbrush parts is my workshop method. It has worked consistently on compatible Iwata, Badger, and Harder & Steenbeck parts with dried water-based acrylic paint. Check your model’s manual because materials vary. Safety note
Disconnect the airbrush from the compressor before disassembly. Use good ventilation and appropriate respiratory protection for the material you spray; see my guide to airbrushing indoors safely. Follow the cleaner label and your airbrush manual. Winsor & Newton states that its cleaner is unsuitable for plastic, polycarbonate, painted, or varnished surfaces. Iwata advises soaking removable nozzle and cap parts for no more than 10 minutes and warns against immersing the complete airbrush.
How to Unclog an Airbrush in 8 Steps
Step 1. Confirm that normal cleaning has failed
Empty the paint cup and run the normal cleaner or water recommended for your paint through the airbrush. Wipe visible tip-dry from the needle and test the spray.
Move to a deep clean when the airbrush still spits, pulses, or refuses to spray.

Step 2. Disconnect the airbrush and clear the work area
Disconnect the air hose and place a clean paper towel on the desk. A light-colored surface makes the smallest nozzle parts easier to see. It also keeps them from rolling into the place where all lost hobby parts apparently go.
Set each component down in the order you remove it. That simple habit makes reassembly much easier.
Step 3. Remove and wipe the needle
Loosen the needle chucking nut and remove the needle according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Hold it by the blunt end. Wipe from the base toward the sharp point with a small amount of compatible cleaner.
A needle bends easily, and a tiny bend can spoil the spray pattern. Keep it flat on the paper towel while you work on the nozzle.
Step 4. Remove the nozzle and front caps
Remove the needle cap, nozzle cap, and nozzle or head components specified in your manual. Some nozzles are tiny and threaded; others use a compression-fit assembly.
Use the supplied tool when one is required and apply very little force. Wipe away reachable paint from the nozzle and caps. A stuck or damaged nozzle needs the manufacturer’s service instructions. Forcing it can turn a cleaning job into a parts order.

Step 5. Soak the compatible metal parts briefly
Place the removable bare-metal nozzle and cap parts in the glass tank. In my demonstration, the cleaner starts loosening dried acrylic within a few minutes. I also leave the front end of the airbrush in the solution, just for good measure. The cleaner does most of the work.
I soak for a short period of time, roughly 1 to 5 minutes as a first pass. Do check your own manual before soaking any component. In my experience, I didn’t find any issues with this method for Iwata, Badger, or Harder & Steenbeck airbrushes. Overall, the Winsor & Newton cleaner solution was safe for my use, and I’ve had no problem leaving parts to soak longer, for several days. It’s unnecessary to do this, but the parts are safe.
Dip the dirty section of the needle only long enough to wet it, then wipe it clean. Leave the needle on the paper towel while the other parts soak.

Step 6. Remove the softened paint and inspect the parts
Lift the parts out with fine tweezers or forceps and place them on the clean towel. Use a cotton swab, lint-free applicator, or the soft cleaning brush recommended by your airbrush maker to remove the softened pigment. The dried paint should slide out with very little pressure. Use the tweezers only to handle the parts; clean them with the softer applicator.
Avoid scraping the inside of the nozzle with a metal reamer or the sharp needle tip. Both parts are easy to damage. A soft brush or manufacturer-approved tool gives you more control around the narrow opening.
Hold the nozzle up to the light and look for debris, a split opening, or an uneven shape. Inspect the needle for a hooked tip. Replace damaged parts because cleaning cannot repair them.
Step 7. Reassemble the airbrush gently
Reinstall the nozzle and caps in the sequence shown in your manual. Seat them snugly and skip the heroic final twist. Fine threads do not reward enthusiasm.
Reinsert the needle slowly with the trigger depressed when your model’s instructions call for it. Let the needle come to a natural stop, then tighten the chucking nut by hand.
Check that the head or nozzle cap is seated correctly. A loose cap or poor nozzle connection can send bubbles back into the paint cup and create an uneven spray.

Step 8. Flush with water and test the spray
Add clean water to the paint cup and spray it through once or twice to remove cleaner residue. Spray into a cleaning pot or through your normal ventilated setup.
Test with water on cardboard first. In the video, I use a 0.3 mm setup at about 30 PSI as a practical diagnostic test. Your regular pressure will depend on the nozzle, paint thickness, and job.
Load a small amount of properly thinned paint after the water sprays in a smooth, steady pattern. The paint should atomize evenly without pulsing, spitting, or throwing large droplets.

Small parts reward slow hands
An airbrush clog can feel like a hard stop in the middle of a painting session. The temptation is to raise the pressure, pull harder on the trigger, and force the paint through. That usually adds noise to the problem.
The deep clean in this video is almost real time. I let the cleaner soften the paint, wipe each piece, and put the tool back together. Small components have a way of making patience visible. A clean tool gives me a clear return to the work I wanted to do.
How to prevent the next airbrush clog
Most stubborn clogs begin with paint drying in the paint path. These habits reduce the chances of seeing that splattered test card again.
- Flush the paint cup between colors and at the end of every session. Acrylic paint becomes much harder to remove after it dries.
- Mix and thin paint in a separate container before transferring it to the cup. Nozzle size, viscosity, and air pressure all affect paint flow.
- Strain old or lumpy paint before it reaches the nozzle.
- Wipe tip-dry from the exposed needle during longer sessions.
- Keep the nozzle cap seated correctly and inspect the needle and nozzle for damage.
- Use the cleaner recommended for the paint and the airbrush materials.

Common questions about unclogging an airbrush
Can I soak the entire airbrush?
Keep the complete airbrush out of liquid. Cleaner can reach seals, the air valve, plastic components, and finishes. Clean only the removable parts identified in your model’s manual.
How long should I soak a clogged nozzle?
Start with 1 to 5 minutes and inspect the part. Iwata sets a 10-minute maximum for its nozzle and cap parts in an appropriate cleaner. Follow the guidance for your own airbrush and cleaner.
Why is my airbrush still sputtering after cleaning?
Check paint thickness, air pressure, needle seating, the chucking nut, nozzle-cap fit, and the condition of the needle and nozzle. Replace a cracked nozzle or bent needle. A second soak will not straighten metal.
Can I use the needle to push paint out of the nozzle?
I avoid using the sharp tip as a reamer. It can bend the needle or damage the nozzle. Use a soft brush, lint-free applicator, wooden cleaning pick, or the manufacturer-recommended tool.
A clean spray and a fresh start
A stubborn airbrush clog usually comes down to a small amount of dried paint in a very small place. Work through the paint path one part at a time, keep the soak brief, reassemble gently, and test with water before you load paint.
Once the spray returns to a smooth, even pattern, stop troubleshooting and get back to painting. That is the whole point of maintaining the tool.
