A miniature can look vivid and finished while its most important forms quietly disappear. Color can conceal that problem. Remove it, and the underlying structure becomes easier to judge.

I use this check before the final highlights on commissioned miniatures. When a face, weapon, or silhouette disappears in grayscale, I know the surrounding value needs to move lighter or darker before I add more detail.

Simplify the picture
Does the face, weapon, or gesture remain distinct when the color disappears?
If two important areas merge into the same gray, separate them with a lighter highlight or a deeper neighboring shadow.
Color creates atmosphere. Value directs attention.
Why color can conceal a weak value structure
Hue tells us whether an area is blue, red, green, or gold. Value tells us how light or dark that area appears. Two colors can feel dramatically different while sharing nearly the same value. When that happens, they may separate beautifully at close range but collapse into one shape across the table. Reserve the strongest contrast for the focal point. Quiet areas give the face, weapon, shield, or gesture somewhere to lead the eye.
How to use the miniature painting grayscale checker
Start with full grayscale. Drag the divider across the image and notice which forms remain separate. Then switch to five values. This removes subtle transitions while preserving enough structure to show how the painting is organized.
The three-value view is the stricter test. Shadows, midtones, and highlights become broad groups. If the focal point survives here, the miniature will usually remain readable under less-than-perfect lighting and from ordinary playing distance.
Finally, move the tabletop-distance control to the right. Fine edge highlights and tiny freehand details will soften. What remains is the large-scale pattern of attention your painting creates.
Use the check before the miniature feels finished
Take a quick photograph before the final detailing stage. If an important area merges with its neighbor, you may not need more detail. A lighter highlight, a darker adjacent plane, or a small change in placement can do more work than another hour of refinement.

Close observation matters, but so does stepping back far enough to see which details still carry the composition. Use grayscale as a brief pause between what you meant to emphasize and what the painted miniature actually shows. Make one targeted value change, photograph the miniature again, and repeat until the focal point holds.
If the focal point still merges with a nearby area, the next step is to use shades to add contrast to the miniature. Deepen one adjacent shadow, then run the grayscale check again.
