What is a Barbarian?
Barbarians are commonly depicted as simple, hulking, musclebound brutes that use anger to get them through battles. But this is not always the case. Barbarians can be very nuanced. Their strength is not just bound up in their bodies, for their mind is equally as powerful. When their mind is in a state of “rage” it enables the Barbarian to ignore the physical abuse their body is taking.

They use the power of “mind over matter” frequently in order to overcome dangerous trials. Barbarians also tend to have a great and powerful culture that they can draw further strength from. Their fighting style maybe rooted in some powerful ancestry. Like a sorcerer, a barbarian’s bloodline may provide them with innate combat skills that other people don’t have access to. Whether they be blessings or curses the barbarian’s fighting style is enhanced by this magical blood.
A Barbarian’s Strength
A barbarian’s strength comes from their intense battle focus. The mindset they use in battle allows them to push pass their physical limits, and shrug off wounds that would cripple lesser warriors.
The source of this focus is typically their “rage” but it can also be described as an instinct, fervor, ferocity, zone, and etc. This rage is also helpful when barbarians must overcome mental manipulation or suffer from severe toxin or when they must dodge something quickly.
They combine body and mind into one deadly and efficient engine. Their combat prowess is only enhanced by the culture or bloodline they hail from. Barbarians have been known to possess breath weapons, transform their bodies to possess fangs or claws like a beast, and even call upon the power of spirits to aid them in battle.
A Barbarian’s Weakness
Barbarians are not worldly warriors. Their minds are so focused on battle, they don’t want to fill it with distractions like “knowledge” or “logic”. Therefore, concepts like technology and magic often elude these adventurers.
A barbarian would rather steel their minds from pain instead of relying on thick steel plate. The barbarians disdain towards advanced magic and technology results in a reputation of stupidity (which is an opinion that should be kept private if YOU are truly smart).
The barbarian fearlessly wades into the thick of the conflict with little protection causing them to accrue dozens if not hundreds of scars. Barbarians are boisterous and blunt in social settings. This coupled with their gruesome appearance means that barbarians are also assumed to be uncharismatic, but get a couple drinks in them and that might change…for better or worse.
A Barbarian’s Folly
Barbarians are terribly proud of their own skills and the culture they hail from. Questioning their prowess or heritage may provoke their ire. A barbarian that feels insulted may feel the urge to settle the score even if they have no hope of victory, or cause them to commit slaughter when its more advantageous to be merciful.
The barbarian may dismiss concepts or ideas that are not related to their interests, culture, or technique. These handicaps are self imposed, there is nothing truly stopping a barbarian from expanding their horizons, other than their own stubbornness.
A Barbarian’s Fear
A barbarian is muscle and instinct and iron will. They are trained to fight and defend the honor and traditions of their creed. Failing to uphold the lessons they doggedly cling to is anathema to them. Indeed this is the root of their fear.
Conclusion: A Barbarian Through and Through
In exploring the depths of what it means to be a Barbarian in the realm of role-playing games, we uncover a character far more complex than the stereotypical brute. Barbarians embody a fascinating blend of raw physical strength, profound mental resilience, and rich cultural heritage that shapes their approach to battle and life.
Their journey is a testament to the power of rage used with purpose, the significance of ancestral ties, and the dual-edged sword of their simplicity and pride.
As we delve into the essence of the Barbarian, we find not just a warrior, but a deeply nuanced character capable of inspiring stories that resonate with the themes of strength, heritage, and the constant battle between instinct and intellect.
