What is a Mimic Chest?
Let’s start at the top. What is a “mimic” in roleplaying games?
In roleplaying games, a mimic is a creature that can take on the appearance of another object. They are often used as traps by dungeon masters, as they can disguise themselves as chests or other objects that players may be tempted to open.

The Forged Gaming Mimic Chest is a great homage to this classic creature. It’s a handcrafted, high quality polyresin chest that is perfect for storing your metal or resin dice, as well as other gaming accessories you need to protect.
Both beautifully crafted and unique, the Forged Gaming Mimic Chest is a great storage solution for your gaming accessories. Use it as a role playing game prop for D&D games or storage for trinkets, tabletop miniatures, dnd figures, rpg tokens, fantasy figurines, and more.
First Impressions: Forged Gaming Mimic Chest
When I first opened the Forged Gaming Mimic Chest, my first impression was that it was really well-packaged. It arrived in a cardboard box and was enveloped in bubble wrap. It was obvious that a lot of care and thought went into the packaging.

As for the Mimic Chest itself, I was impressed with its heft and weight! It’s made out of a solid polyresin and is really well-crafted. The detail on the chest is amazing, and it really looks like a mimic!

You would think that a “box” or “storage” accessory for your roleplaying games would be boring. Well, not this one! Reaching into the package, I had to use both hands to make sure I had a good grip on the Mimic Chest.

Again, the weight and density of this chest is really impressive. It feels like it could take a beating and would last a long time. Every part of this accessory felt cleanly sculpted, with clear edges, textures and details. Overall, I was impressed by its thoroughly solid feel.
Look and Feel: Does it Look like a Real Chest?
Taking a closer look at the exterior of the Mimic Chest from Forged Gaming, I noticed how carefully painted it was. It looked as though it belonged in some Dungeon, damp and old, and waiting to be explored by adventurers.

Indeed, a closer inspection of the outside of the Mimic Chest reveals nice details!
The latch clicked open and the hinges swung smoothly to reveal the interior of the chest–more about the interior, hinge and latch mechanism below. The first thing that caught my eye were the detailed sculpting on the inside of the lid. It looked like a very life-like mimic, with razor sharp teeth and a glossy (almost slimy looking) interior, like the mouth of some predator ready to take a chomp out of an unwary player.

Back to the outside, the sculpted texture on the lid is so well done, it’s almost like real wood grain (with that sort of cartoony appearance). The burnished bronze or brass metallic accent around the edge, by the latch, and along the bottom of the chest looked weathered with a patina of age. These little pre-painted details really helped to set the scene and give it that dungeon feel.

I’ll note that for those of you who like painting miniatures and models may enjoy re-painting this Mimic Chest. Certainly the quality of the paint job is around that tabletop quality. It looks really good from a distance. But in the eyes of a miniature painter who cares about the small stuff, there is a lot that you could do to improve the painted look of this mimic chest.

Suffice it to say, the exterior of the Mimic Chest gives off a playful atmosphere in a serious way (if this makes sense). It’s a tad campy, but it’s all in good fun and no doubt attractive.
How Well Does the Mimic Chest Open? Does it Work?
The hinges and latch on the Forged Gaming Mimic Chest are really well done. They feel sturdy and work smoothly. The chest opens easily , revealing the interior of the mimic. The sculpted detail on the inside of the lid is really well done, as I mentioned above. It’s also a good size for storing dice or other gaming accessories.

The weight of the lid is balanced back when fully opened so that it doesn’t fall forward. It’s quite a surprise to see those teeth and gaping maw reveal itself when you swing open that lid! I’m not sure that will get old.

The only possible downside I could see is that, because of the teeth which slot into the interior of the chest, you may not have as much room inside for storage as you think. But, that’s the cost of a well-executed, life-like mimic!
The Inside: A Mouth, Teeth, Oh My!
The interior of the Forged Gaming Mimic Chest is definitely where the magic happens. The first thing you see when you open it up are the detailed sculpting on the lid, looking like a very life-like mimic, with faux-razor sharp teeth and a life-like hard palette. The only thing missing is a gross looking tongue (but then where would you store your TTRPG stuff!

For DND, I can see the interior space as enough to store my polyhedral dice, small tokens, or coins. For other tabletop games, like Warhammer or Warmachine, it could easily double as a storage container for dice and tokens, too. As a DM or GM, a bit of creativity with this Mimic Chest could enhance your narrative tabletop experience for your players.

I don’t think there’s enough space inside the chest for a miniature; that’s not what this is for. But, there are plenty of other miniature storage options, including Dice Bags and Cases.
What Good is a Forged Gaming Mimic Chest?
I think that anyone who is into tabletop roleplaying games would benefit from owning the Forged Gaming Mimic Chest. It’s a great storage container for gaming accessories, and the well-done faux-wood sculpting and metal accents give it a really cool, dungeon vibe.

This Mimic Chest is perfect for dungeon masters and players who want an attractive storage container that will also add a touch of atmosphere to their games. The detail on the sculpting and painting is really impressive, and I think it would be a great addition to any gaming collection.
The Mimic Chest is a great gift for anyone who loves tabletop RPGs.
What Am I Going to Do with My Mimic Chest?
So many ideas…
I’m personally going to keep mine in my workplace office. Hah!–It could be a nice ice breaker piece when I’m in a meeting with a new coworker! I’ll pop it open at an opportune moment and watch their eyes light up with curiosity (or fear!).
“What in the world is that?” they’ll ask. And then I’ll get to tell them all about my gaming and miniature hobbies. I think that’s a pretty cool use for it–a conversation piece of sorts–and I’m sure any gamer would appreciate it too.
How Does the Forged Gaming Mimic Chest Compare to Other storage Solutions?
This is certainly not the most practical storage option you could buy for the money. It’s a bit on the clunky, heavy side and doesn’t have a ton of interior space. However, it is handcrafted and very well made, so you’re paying for the quality, detail, and narrative RPG elements here.
