For example, if you’re looking for the “most random” rollers, then take a closer look at sharp-edged, resin dice sets, e.g., Game Science Dice, or similar dice.
For those looking for “oomph!”, that tangible feeling and thud of your decisions rolling across your gaming table, then heavy metal dice may be up your dark alley.
Ultimately, in my humble opinion, if you’re shopping for dice sets and struggling to find “the one to rule them all, then the issue is beyond “need”—You’re looking for style. 😅

What Dice Do I Need for Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) or other RPG Tabletop Games?
Although, every player has their own preferences when it comes down to choosing the best dice set for Dungeons and Dragons, it is usually a good idea (even necessary) to choose at least seven different types of dice. These seven dice types are: D4, D6, D8, D10, D10 (percentile die), D12, and a D20.
Having more than one of each die will allow players to determine the outcomes of in-game actions more quickly. It is also worth mentioning that there are many different materials that these unique rpg dice can be made out of.
Material Types for Polyhedral Dice

There’s generally five kinds of dice available in Dungeon and Dragons: plastic, resin, metal, stone, and wood. And, I’ll note that any material you choose will tailor to your inclination, like when you buy a pair of shoes for a particular occasion.
All these materials will let you play the game nicely—choosing between these materials is personal preference. Ultimately, the coolest D&D dice are those that fit your story, your narrative, the “thing” you gravitate toward. Just remember that any useful, unique dice set will have a D20, D12, D10, D10 (percentile), D8, D6, and D4 die.
All this information will only expose you to the opportunity to decide for yourself. It’s kind of an addiction if you stick around too long—as I’m sure, if you’re like myself, many of you chronic RPGer’s will agree with—shopping for gaming accessories is part of the fun.
With that said, here are some more details about the kinds and materials odice you can find for your next session.
Plastic and resin dice
The most common materials used in making D&D dice sets is plastic or poly-resins. Some may throw in ceramic-based dice, e.g., feels and looks like a smooth or matte finished bone material, in this category. But, in general, the most popular and accessible dice for any player is acrylic or plastic dice sets.
Note that acrylic resin dice are denser than comparably sized plastic dice. If you’re looking for a heavier set of polyhedrals for your RPG games, and want the clear translucent appearance, resin is the material you want your dice made of. In short, the difference between plastic and resin dice construction is the material density, which affects their weight in your hand.
When buying new dice, plastic or resin material is practical as they are durable as well as affordable. They have the added bonus of not leaving any scratches or marks on your tables as well as being easy to wash and clean.
Metal dice
Dice made from metal, such as pewter, brass, or zinc are also common in DnD games. Are metal dice any good? Some of the best d&d dice in my opinion are metal constructed. Enthusiasts often collect metal dice for their games, because the weight and density of metallic dice add another level of excitement and immersion to a game.
Metal dice make noise, clunking at and thumping on tabletops or dice trays with an satisfying finish. This may be an advantage or a limitation.If thrown too hard, metal dice can scratch surfaces, dent soft wood tables, tear up character sheets, and knock over miniatures and spill beverages. Be careful, or use a dice tray. Some metal dice can also be quite expensive, but they make every rolling decision an thrilling adventure.
Stone dice
Stone dice are an interesting material that you and your DnD buddies may want enjoy. Smooth to the touch (most of the time) and heavy, stone dice will give you a different feel than other materials. They’re beautiful and durable. Dice made of stone can be expensive, but that all depends on the design and type of stone, e.g., marble, faux stone.
Stone dice are rarer than other kinds of dice, so you might not find them in your local gaming store. If you want cool, heavy weighted dice that isn’t metal, and fun to roll or throw, then dice made of stone is worth considering.
Of course, I wouldn’t recommend rolling stone naked DND dice on a glass or wooden tabletop. That would be a critical fail.
Wood dice
Another dice material option is wood. Wooden dice are relatively uncommon, although there are some DnD dice sets that use this material. These types of dice are usually handmade and are sometimes hand painted. If you’re into making your own dice, want to give that artisanal hobby a try, maybe wood is the best material to start with?
To be fair, we didn’t include any wooden dice in our recommended dice list below. Wood dice don’t seem to last long when handled and their rolling character may change over time.
Other dice materials
Of course, there are many other types of dice materials you can find, e.g., carbon fiber, and more! You may even discover composite dice that combine many types of materials, including inlaid resin-infused wooden dice.
What are the 7-Dice in DnD?
There are 7 dice in a polyhedral dice set for games of DnD. Most other RPGs, like Pathfinder, also use the same set of dice. Here they are:
D4
These are 4 sided dice that look like a pyramid. You shouldn’t leave these on the floor, as they will act like caltrops and stab anyone who dares walk barefoot. The pain is only matched by strewn Legos.
D6
A D6 die has six sides and is numbered 1 to 6. Depending on the weapon of the character the d6 can be used at melee. Sometimes an action requires rolling multiple d6s.
D8
A D8 has eight sides and often used for determining the damage of weapons, such as a light crossbow and melee weapons, e.g., longsword. Spells often cause two or more d8 damages when thrown.
D10
A D10 die has 10 sides numbered 1 thru 10. If your character is using a hefty weapon like a halberd or a pike, a D10 is a common die to use to determine damage against an enemy combatant.
D10 (percentile)
Sometimes you’ll need to determine the percent chance of an event happening. This is when the D10 percentile dice comes into play. A percentile roll may be necessary if a character is likely to succeed in a certain task.
D12
For some weapons, a D12 (or 12 sided die) will allow you to determine the damage for some more powerful, or specialized weapons. Other uses for the D12 in DnD or RPGs is to determine how specific situations or encounters play out. The D12 is not used as often as the other dice in the game.
D20
A D20 or twenty-sided die is the iconic D&D die you’ll see everywhere. A lot of situations call for a D20 roll. The d20 is the most common dice in D&D, and many other RPG games the D20 for nearly every aspect of gameplay, e.g., rolling for initiative. The D20 has long been used for determining the success of a task.

According to the vendor, you will not feel fatigue because the ergonomic design ensures your wrists don’t catch on that extra edge of heaviness every time it rolls across the table or dice tray. I don’t actually know what this means, but it’s cool.
