How do you take your favorite D&D minis to your games?

Do You Need a D&D Miniature Carrying Case?

A d&d miniature carrying case is any sort of portable box or carry-all that you can use to transport your D&D miniatures from one place to another. You need a carrying case because your miniatures are fragile, and if they were just tossed in your bag with some dice and other gaming paraphernalia, it would only take one bump for them to be smashed.

The best d&d miniature carrying cases for tabletop gamers are lightweight, compact, and durable. A good d&d miniature carrying case will be able to hold all of favorite miniatures while protecting them from wear and tear during travel. Finally, the best d&d miniature carrying cases will have plenty of room on the inside for anything else you might be carrying (like dice, tokens, or other models).

D&D miniature storage is a little more complicated and requires some thought. There are multiple options for storing your miniatures depending on how much space you need.

Must-Know Features for any Useful RPG Miniatures Carrying Case

  • Protection
  • Lightweight
  • Capacity
  • Easy to carry
  • Durability
  • Inconspicuous

Protection

I think we’ve all dealt with the close-calls (and horrors) of transporting your precious D&D miniatures. A D&D miniature carrying case should protect your painted miniatures. Whether they are packed in peanut foam, precut EVA, or egg foam trays, your miniatures shouldn’t bounce around, let alone get crushed during your many travels. If you’re storing models after gameplay, you want to be sure they are ready and all in one piece when your next session starts.

Of course, it’s one thing to get your miniatures all boxed up and ready for transport. But, then you have to carry that box or case around with you like you’re some kind of railroad worker. Luckily, the d&d miniature carrying cases I share with you below are lightweight and compact without sacrificing protection.

Capacity

If you’re looking for a D&D miniature carrying case, you should plan ahead for the number of minis you want to carry. My favorite miniature cases for RPG gaming sessions carry 1-3 miniatures. I’m generally only responsible for my own character, so who needs more minis? Ultimately, be sure to get a miniature case for your RPGs that has enough room for all the miniatures you plan to play with. I know most experienced RPG players have about 20-30 in their collection.

If this is the case, then having some extra miniature storage and travel space available is helpful, especially if you’re going to a convention or playing multiple games. Maybe you’re the GM and need to take NPC or monster miniatures with you.

If you’re looking for a carrying case that will also hold your dice, cards, and other small tabletop items like those found in the D&D Starter Set from Wizards of the Coast, consider getting something like these sling bag type cases for RPG books, miniatures, and accessories. This is an excellent option if you want to have everything in one place!

Lightweight/Easy to Carry

It’s also important to think about the weight and size when it comes time for miniature carrying case. If you’re always on-the-go and need something lightweight that will fit in your backpack or purse, you should get a smaller one like this D&D Miniature Figure Vault.

Most carry cases for RPG miniatures are small and compact, which is perfect for traveling safely with your precious avatars. If you want something larger, try a bigger D&D miniature carrying case with plenty of room for your miniatures and other small items.

Durability

The best d&d miniature carrying cases are the ones that will last. They need to be tough and durable so they can take a beating from being tossed around in your car or dropped on the ground at a game store. So, try to get one made out of plastic (like this Hardshell Miniature Travel Case) or something that is made to protect electronics (like this).

Inconspicuous

Finally, let’s talk about the need for d&d miniature carrying cases to be stealthy. This may or may not apply to you. If you’re a player or GM in public and want your miniatures protected without attracting attention, choose a case that looks like the storage box for headphones or other electronic device. In general, for a more inconspicuous miniature travel case, use one that will fit with your other daily items, e.g., laptop, book bag. Some D&D travel cases are small enough to fit in a large coat pocket or purse.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What size should I get for my D&D miniatures carrying case and what type of material should it be made out of?

The size of a D&D miniature travel case should depend on how many miniatures you have, and whether or not they’re painted. For painted miniatures, you will want foam trays or other soft material to prevent abrading, denting, or scratching models. If you’re carrying more than a single miniature, you want to also make sure your models don’t collide with each other during travel.

What’s next, adventurer?

Pre-cut foam trays are great for those who need to store or travel with multiple painted miniatures. NOte that the best miniature carrying cases for RPG minifigures use a hard shell exterior made of injection molded plastic, or hard foam covered in synthetic durable fabric, e.g., polyester.

What are some of the best travel bags for RPG gamers on the go and why do they work so well?

I’m sure you’ve seen those big, bulky backpacks. They’re perfect if you have multiple gaming sessions in one day or want to carry around all your RPGs and books along with a water bottle. Here is a full overview of the best bags for carrying RPG books and other gaming accessories.

They’re also great if you have an unpredictable schedule or are on-the-go everyday, but can be heavy to lug around for long periods of time. I’ve seen people using them as luggage when they travel overseas!

What are the best d&d miniature storage cases?

The best D&D miniature storage cases are the ones that will last. They need to be tough and durable so they can take a beating from being tossed around in your car or dropped on the ground at a game store. So, try to get one made out of plastic (like this one shown above).

Is it worth it to use custom trays?

Custom trays with foam storage can allow great storage ideas, but isn’t necessary. If your miniatures are large or an odd shape, you can use pluck foam trays that let you shape the slots however you need to make your models fit. You can place these trays into an appropriately sized box or use a compatible bag.

A tackle box often is cheap and saves you from time and money that should be spent on many things. But it’ll still help make your workshop look tidy and organized. Spending extra money (or taking more time on creating something more interesting for a child) will often be less than worth it. You’ll find that it’s not always worthwhile paying for a special tray or custom storage solution for your kids. We also recommend use tackle boxes to store minis in gaming workshops.

What should I look for in a good army-sized transport bag?

A reliable mini transportation bag and case which can protect your miniature armies should be sturdy, lightweight and easy to transport. It should be compatible with your favorite scale miniatures (e.g., Warhammer 40k is a 28-35mm scale tabletop wargame). Check out this review of some popular foam miniature army transport and storage solutions.

Conclusion

There are a multiple ways you can transport your miniature characters. Sometimes you might need to carry them in your pocket or backpack. Other times you may want something that will fit your other game accessories, like dice and pencils. Maybe you need to carry an entire collection of miniatures for your RPG. Whatever your needs are, it’s important to match up the right carrying with your specific purpose.
